Many beginners make the mistake of not focusing on proper posture when they start playing. Place your feet shoulder width apart and bend your knees slightly. Be very careful not to bend forward too much, your weight should be evenly distributed between your heels and your toes.

Golf Tips – Improving Your Par

The game breaks down into driving, chipping and putting. Improve on just one of these areas and you should see your score drop. But actually, that is not always the case. There are times when an improvement in one area won’t show a drop in score because the next area isn’t benefiting. Spending all day learning how to hit longer drives won’t lower your score if you are still left chipping off the fairway.

So how do you progress? A little at a time and here are our steps.

Beginner
For the beginner, practise your driving until you can confidently arrive on the fairway off the tee most of the time. Don’t worry about distance just yet, that will come later. Make the swings smooth and gentle. Keep the rhythm there and concentrate on getting the ball onto the fairway.

If you can get the ball on the fairway, instead of in the rough, then there is a good chance of getting the ball to the putting surface.

Confident Driver
Now that you can get the ball from the tee and down the fairway the aim is to get it onto the putting surface. So concentrate on practising the part of the game that is almost certainly least practised – chipping the ball!

Your aim here is to continue the ball’s journey to as close as the flag as possible. Learn to chip close to the flag and hopefully you will soon be taking just one chip, instead of two or more, to get to the position whereby you can get the putter out.

As you continue to see progress with your chipping continue practising, but shortly you will be ready to concentrate on the next step.

The Clever Chipper
By now you can chip onto the green, hopefully quite near to the flag. On a par 3 you might be here in 2 shots, but probably also on the shorter par 4s you will be here in 2. A good feeling!

So now is the time to start practising those putts. One put to get near the flag and then a second one to hole it in. A few lucky long putts and you might actually only need one stroke on the green, but reduce those 3 putts you are taking and your score plummets! Just remember, when you can leave the ball on the downhill side of the hole on the first putt if the green is sloped – it makes the second shot easier!

The Practiced Putter
Once you can confidently sink the ball in two putts, you want to start aiming for some single putts. You do this not by better putting, but by better approaches to the green, so back to the chipping. Hone in your chipping skills to land the ball closer to the flag and increase your chance of single putting.

And finally, it is time to complete those skills. Now you can go back to the range and start trying to increase those drive lengths, whilst improving your chipping and making sure that a third putt is a wasted shot you hardly ever need.

Golf Tips – Stretching

Although golf is a non-contact sport, injuries can occur. The most common cause of injury is straining a muscle because the golfer did not properly limber his body before swinging the clubs. General physical fitness and good health can prepare a golfer’s body for the unusual body motion of the golf swing, but a good stretching routine can help also. There are three main parts of the body that you will want to warm up before swinging at golf balls: the back/torso, the arms/shoulders, and the legs.

Back/Torso

The most common injury that arises in golf is some sort of muscles pull to the back or torso. Before grabbing a club, you should bend at the waist and try to touch your toes, and hold that position for 20 seconds. Repeat this as many times as you feel necessary to loosen the lower back.

After loosening the lower back, grab a golf club and lock it behind your back with your arms. Begin to twist your back from side to side. Begin with small twists, and make the twists larger as you limber-up. You may also bend forward it the hips gradually while twisting.

Finally, grab each end of the club, place it behind your neck, and begin making shoulder turns. This twisting is similar to the previous exercise, but should to begin to loosen the shoulders and arms. You may also choose to stop the twist at its furthest point on each side, to really stretch those back muscles.

Arms/Shoulders

To loosen the shoulders, take your left hand and lift it over and behind your left shoulder. Take your right hand, place it behind your back, and interlock your hands together. Hold this stretch for approximately twenty seconds, and switch hands. Again, do this as many times as you feel necessary until you gain the desired flexibility in the shoulders.

To loosen the hands and wrists, take two clubs in your hands, and waggle the cubs from side to side. Then start moving the clubs up and down, and then all around. Also, just shaking out your hands is a good way to loosen the fingers.

Legs

The hips are very important in the golf swing, so you should make sure they are loose before you swing. Lie on the ground, lock your hands behind one of your knees, and pull that knee toward your chest. Hold this stretch for twenty seconds, release it, and switch legs.

While you are on the ground, sit up, spread your legs apart, and reach out in front of you with your hands. This should be stretching your hamstrings. Again, hold this stretch for 20 seconds, and repeat as necessary.

Golf Tips – The Takeaway

Although there is some similarity between Croquet and Golf (both are played on grass, or should be anyway, both use balls, both are played by using some sort of club or mallet to move the balls, etc…) most people don’t usually associate the two. However there is one way to relate the two sports in a way that may help you on the golf course with your takeaway.

Even if you’ve never played croquet it’s easy to understand that if you want to roll the croquet balls accurately you must swing the mallet in such a way as to have the head very very close to the ground as you approach the ball and even for a few inches past the point of contacting the ball. This is why many, if not most, croquet shots are executed by swinging the mallet between your legs like a pendulum. It promotes an arc that is “flat” at the bottom.

When taking the club head away on a golf shot you need to do the same thing. That is, don’t pull the club head up to quickly, but rather try to take it away slowly and smoothly so you flatten the “arc” at the bottom of the swing. This is especially important any time you are hitting off a tee with a driver or fairway wood.

To promote the feeling of a long, slow, flat arc on your tee shots imagine that your club (driver or fairway wood) is going to try to roll a croquet ball backwards from your golf ball. Your objective is not to hit the imaginary croquet ball a long way, but rather to start it rolling smoothly. This way you improve the motion of your takeaway which gives you a much better chance to return your club head on the correct swing plane to your golf ball.

Golf tips for better putting are something every golfer can use when they are struggling around the green. I have prepared this article with one valuable tip I was given a few years ago. Golfing is something I have been doing for many years, whether it was playing or for employment. I have logged many hours on the golf course that has exposed to me to thousands of tips on golf over the years. A few years ago a friend of mine, who was always giving me golf tips, gave me this book after I explained to him how putting was the thing that was killing my game. If you are pretty good from tee to green, but cant seem to get those putts to go in, you are experiencing what I was. You may be asking why I am recommending this book instead of any other books with tips on putting. This book is different because it does not talk about the mechanics of the game. These golf tips for beginners will help you out if your just getting started playing golf. Remember that any sport can have a learning curve so do not stress it if things do not go as planned as soon as you start playing.

I will go ahead and tell you that golf is one of the games that requires the most skill of them all. This is great because it gives you a chance to truely master and outshine your peers in the game! - The grip is important! Sure it might not seem to be important but it is! Hold the club and make sure the club head is lying down on the ground. When you close your first your club should be held with your first two fingers and palm.

- Your stance is also very important. Make sure your feet are shoulder width apart. This is known as the square stance and is a great way to get started.

- Last your golf swing is really important for beginners! You didn’t see that coming did you? Ok so you need to start the backswing with your back and shoulder muscles mainly. When you go back to swing you need to shift your weight to your right foot for balance. Once you have around 90% of your weight on your backfoot you should release.

Golf Tips – Slice No More – The Secret to Quit Slicing

Having trouble controlling the golf ball? Are you slicing it well off your intended target line? Don’t let your slice ruin your enjoyment of golf. Get rid of your slice using a few tips that will straighten your ball out in no time.

Alignment

Golf is all about alignment. You can have the perfect swing but if you are aligned wrong you’ll still hit the ball into the woods. Getting the proper alignment is easy once you know the steps.

First you should place your club behind your ball and aim the clubface directly at the target. The clubface and the imaginary straight line between your club and the target should be a perfect 90 degree angle. This is called being “square.” Now you should step into your stance with the toes of your feet parallel to that same line. This will actually look like you are aiming slightly to the left because your feet will point just left of the target. This is called a “parallel left” alignment and will produce the straightest flying shot.

Backswing

Now that you are properly setup to hit the shot the backswing must be executed properly. You have to start the club back squarely. This means you should rotate the shoulders first. Don’t pull away with your hands, you’ll pull the club too far behind you on an inside path. This will cause you to “throw” the club from the top. Throwing is also known as “casting” and is one of the biggest reasons people slice the ball. Don’t start using your arms in the backswing until about 3 feet into your backswing and then let them act naturally. Because you started them on the right path you will get into the proper position at the top of the swing much more easily.

Downswing

Now it’s time to let it go. You’ve done the prep work and everything should be ready for a nice solid strike. You only need to think of one thing at this point and that is about hitting the ball on the inside and back quarter of the ball. If the ball was slice into 4 different quadrants it would be the one that is closest too you and to the back of the ball. Trying to hit the inside quarter of the ball will keep you from coming “over the top” on the ball and slicing it. You may even see a draw.

Using the setup in the above golf tips slicing will be a thing of the past.
